In the early morning hours of March 6, 2023, a life was cut tragically short in Garden City, Kansas. Braxtyn Loyd, a 27-year-old White/Caucasian male, was fatally shot inside a residence on North 3rd Street. The events that led to this fatal encounter began after a family member picked Loyd up after he had been out for the evening. An altercation subsequently broke out among family members at the home.
The dispute escalated dramatically when Loyd allegedly produced a firearm and
threatened the other family members. In the ensuing confrontation, another individual at the residence shot Loyd. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 5:30 a.m., where they found him with a gunshot wound. First responders transported him to St. Catherine Hospital for initial treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Braxtyn Loyd succumbed to his injuries and died later that day.
Following the incident, the Garden City Police Department launched a thorough investigation into the shooting. After gathering and reviewing all available evidence, the case was presented to the Finney County Attorney's Office. Both law enforcement agencies came to the same conclusion: the evidence indicated that the individual who shot Loyd had acted in self-defense. As a result of this determination, authorities announced that no arrests would be made in connection with the death, and no criminal charges would be filed against the shooter. The case was officially closed, leaving a family to grapple with the devastating outcome of a volatile domestic dispute.
