On a tragic evening in Kansas City, Kansas, the life of 26-year-old Hispanic male Jeremy Rocha was cut short in a violent encounter that also claimed the lives of two others. On May 9, 2017, police were called to a residence in the 1900 block of South Boeke Street, where they discovered a grim scene. Inside the home, Jeremy Rocha, his 47-year-old father Vincent Rocha, and 47-year-old Bernadette Gosserand had been fatally shot.
A fourth individual, a man in his twenties, was also found at the scene with gunshot wounds but survived his injuries. Miraculously, three young children, all under the age of five, were discovered in the home unharmed.
The investigation into the triple homicide quickly led authorities to a suspect. Jason Tucker, a 28-year-old man known to the family, was arrested in connection with the killings. Prosecutors would later reveal that the violent episode stemmed from an ongoing dispute between Tucker and Bernadette Gosserand's son, Bryan Balza, who was the man wounded in the attack. It was reported that Balza had previously sought a protection order against Tucker. On the night of the murders, Tucker allegedly confronted and shot Balza on the front porch of the family's home before proceeding inside and killing the other three victims. Initial reports also suggested that an attempted burglary may have been a motive.
In the face of overwhelming evidence, Jason Tucker was charged with capital murder, attempted capital murder, attempted burglary, and violation of a protection order. In a move that would spare the victims' families the ordeal of a lengthy trial, Tucker pleaded guilty to capital murder in February 2018. In exchange for his guilty plea, prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty. Two months later, in April 2018, Jason Tucker was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to the legal chapter of this devastating crime. The loss of Jeremy Rocha, his father, and Bernadette Gosserand left a lasting scar on their community and a void in the lives of their friends and family, who remembered Jeremy for his kindness and infectious laugh.
