In the early morning hours of July 16, 2017, the quiet life of Arthur Goebel, a 66-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in his Wichita, Kansas home. An unknown individual forced their way into the residence located at 2320 E. MacArthur while Goebel and his wife were sleeping. Hearing the disturbance, Goebel, a retired United States Air Force Master Sergeant, armed himself with a handgun and went to investigate.
Upon opening his bedroom door to confront the intruder, he was
shot twice, sustaining wounds to his neck and leg that would prove fatal. The assailant then entered the bedroom and confronted Goebel's wife before fleeing the scene. His wife of 43 years, Surang, immediately called 911. The devoted husband and father was a man of deep faith, known for his kindness and integrity. He was an active member of his church and was involved in a ministry that provided food for those in need.
The death of Arthur Goebel was ruled a homicide, and the Wichita Police Department began an investigation. Despite appeals to the public for assistance, the perpetrator has never been identified, and no arrests have been made in the case. The case remains an open and unsolved homicide in the Wichita Police Department's Cold Case Unit. The unknown suspect who ended the life of the beloved husband, father, and grandfather has yet to be brought to justice.
