Azuri Jones-Willis, a 16-year-old Black girl, was riding in the back seat of a white Honda with friends on the early afternoon of September 23, 2021, when a brief confrontation in a parking lot near 14th and North Terrace spilled into the streets around Wichita State University. As the Honda pulled away with the girls, three teenage boys in a red Kia—later determined to be stolen—gave chase.
In the area of 15th and Kenmar, one of the boys fired multiple rounds into the Honda, striking Azuri as she sat in the back. Her friends rushed her directly to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries.
Police quickly located the abandoned Kia near Vesta and Fountain and detained three suspects after a short foot pursuit. That same day, Wichita police announced the arrests of two 17-year-old males and a 16-year-old male on suspicion of first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle; one of the 17-year-olds was also arrested on a charge of felon in possession of a firearm. Investigators recovered a handgun and emphasized the incident was not random, involving people who knew one another.
As the case progressed, prosecutors later identified one of the teens as Kayden Wilson. In October 2022, at age 18, Wilson made his first court appearance on charges including first-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm, multiple counts of aggravated assault, and criminal use of weapons. In 2023 he was convicted and sentenced to 152 months—just over twelve years and eight months—in prison in connection with Azuri’s death, with local reports describing the conviction as for second-degree murder alongside related counts.
Azuri’s death reverberated through Wichita’s schools and neighborhoods, where classmates and community members remembered her as a teenager whose afternoon ride with friends turned into a desperate flight from danger. The police timeline, the recovered weapon, and the swift arrests formed a stark narrative of a dispute that escalated into a car-to-car chase and gunfire on residential streets—an escalation that ended with a family grieving a daughter and a courtroom reckoning for a teenage shooter.
