In the early hours of April 13, 2020, in Wichita, Kansas, the life of 18-year-old Aubrey Resendez, a Caucasian female, was tragically cut short in a burst of violence. Just after midnight, police were dispatched to a Kwik Shop on South West Street following reports of a shooting. There, they discovered a white Dodge Avenger with its rear window shattered. Inside the vehicle was Aubrey, who had sustained a gunshot wound, along with her 18-year-old boyfriend and her 27-year-old brother.
While the two men were unharmed, Aubrey was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a preceding altercation in the 4200 block of West Pawnee. The occupants of the Dodge Avenger had been involved in a disturbance with an individual driving a silver 2006 Dodge Ram pickup truck. During this confrontation, the driver of the truck, later identified as 32-year-old Joshua Johnson of Wichita, fired multiple shots at the Avenger, one of which fatally struck Aubrey. The truck Johnson was driving had been reported stolen out of Reno County.
Law enforcement officials quickly identified Johnson as the primary suspect. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with Aubrey Resendez's death. Further investigation suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence. It was reported that an altercation had occurred earlier at the Sleepy Hollow mobile home park between Johnson and the occupants of the car Aubrey was in. Following the dispute, Johnson pursued the vehicle and fired upon it.
