In the late hours of December 3, 2018, a tragic series of events unfolded that ended the life of 28-year-old Hispanic male, Dominic Garcia, in Kansas City, Kansas. The violence began when Garcia and a female companion were shot while in a car near Seventh Street and Osage Avenue around 11:30 p.m. Despite being wounded, Garcia took the wheel and sped toward the University of Kansas Hospital, seeking urgent medical help for himself and the woman.
Their desperate flight for safety turned
into a terrifying chase as the gunman pursued them. Upon reaching the hospital, Garcia exited the vehicle and ran towards the main entrance, only to find the inner doors locked for the night, a standard security procedure. Trapped in the vestibule between the outer and inner doors, Garcia was cornered by his pursuer. The gunman fired at him again, inflicting fatal wounds.
The harrowing incident, which police later described as stemming from a domestic dispute, concluded as a murder-suicide. After shooting Garcia, the suspect, who was reportedly married to the female victim, turned the gun on himself and took his own life at the hospital entrance. Dominic Garcia, remembered by his family as a hardworking and loving husband and father, died from his injuries. The female victim survived with non-life-threatening injuries. Because the lone suspect died by suicide at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with Garcia's death.
