In the afternoon hours of September 26, 2016, a burst of violence shattered the ordinary atmosphere of a strip mall parking lot in Kansas City, Kansas, leaving a young man's life extinguished. Clarence Tre Buford, a 21-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot at the commercial center located at 43rd Street and State Avenue. When police responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 2:20 p.m., they discovered Buford's body in the parking lot.
He had sustained an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death of Clarence Buford quickly moved forward, and within a day, authorities had their first suspect in custody. Marco McElwee, who was 18 years old at the time, was arrested and booked on September 27, 2016. In the weeks that followed, the investigation pointed toward the involvement of two brothers. Law enforcement officials publicly identified D'Adrian Jones, 20, and his 19-year-old brother, Kavon Jones, as additional suspects in the homicide. Both were charged with first-degree murder in Wyandotte County District Court for their alleged roles in Buford's killing. Police sought the public's assistance in locating the brothers, cautioning that they should be considered armed and dangerous.
The search for the Jones brothers continued, and on October 20, 2016, D'Adrian Jones turned himself in to the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. He was subsequently booked into the Wyandotte County Jail on a first-degree murder charge. The final suspect, Kavon Jones, remained at large for another month. His time as a fugitive came to an end in November 2016. On November 23, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Chief announced that Kavon Jones had been apprehended. With his capture, all three suspects accused in the death of Clarence Buford were in police custody, bringing a measure of resolution to the initial phase of a case that had begun with a fatal shooting in broad daylight.
