In the autumn of 2020, the life of a 43-year-old Black / African American man named Lolester Mitchell came to a tragic end in Kansas City, Kansas. On the morning of September 29th, police were called to the Silver City apartments in the 2200 block of Silver Court, a community in the Argentine neighborhood. Inside one of the apartment units, a grim discovery was made – the body of Lolester Mitchell. It was soon determined that he had been fatally shot.
The apartment complex was undergoing renovations at the time, leading to a significant number of people being present in the area, which presented a complex crime scene for investigators to process.
The investigation into the homicide quickly progressed, and within days, police announced that they had suspects in custody. Following the arrests, the Wyandotte County District Attorney's office filed charges against two individuals from Kansas City, Kansas: 22-year-old Cooper Allan Beck and 38-year-old Billy Joe Blood. Beck faced the most severe charge of second-degree intentional murder in the death of Mitchell. His charges also included conspiracy interference with a law enforcement officer, threat of force or violence, obstructing or resisting in a felony case, and criminal possession of a firearm.
Billy Joe Blood was also implicated in the events surrounding Mitchell's death, though she was not charged with his murder. Instead, she faced a series of charges related to hindering the investigation. These included conspiracy interference with a law enforcement officer, obstructing or resisting in a felony case, intimidation of a witness or victim, preventing the reporting of a crime, and obstructing the apprehension or prosecution of a person who has committed or is charged with a felony. Both Beck and Blood were taken into custody and held at the Wyandotte County jail. A judge set Beck's bond at $250,000, while Blood's bond was set at $50,000. The motive for the killing was not immediately disclosed by the police.
