On January 29, 1985, Sergeant Joseph M. Cournoyer, aged 30, was tragically killed in Washington, DC. He was a dedicated member of the Metropolitan Police Department, having served for six years and recently promoted to sergeant. On the evening of his death, Sergeant Cournoyer was on duty at the Minnesota Avenue Metro platform when he encountered a suspect involved in a robbery at a nearby Murray's Steaks store.
