In the early evening hours of December 30, 2022, a sense of tragedy befell a Southeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood. Reekey Garner, a 32-year-old Black man from the Northeast quadrant of the city, found his life cut short in a sudden act of violence. At approximately 6:09 p.m., the sound of gunshots echoed through the 900 block of 12th Street Southeast, a residential area just north of the interstate.
When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's First District arrived at the scene, they discovered Garner suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the location, but despite their efforts, there were no signs of life. Reekey Garner was pronounced dead at the scene, his life tragically ending on a street in Capitol Hill. His body was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The incident marked one of four homicides to occur in the District in a short span of time, shaking the community.
In the aftermath of the shooting, detectives from the Homicide Branch began their investigation into Garner's death. A lookout was issued for a dark-colored, four-door sedan that was seen fleeing the area, heading westbound on I Street Southeast. However, the vehicle and its occupants have remained elusive. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Reekey Garner, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Metropolitan Police Department continues to seek information from the public, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any details that lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this tragic loss of life. The case remains an open and active investigation.
