A fourteen-year-old male named Avion Evans was fatally shot on the afternoon of Thursday, April 4, 2024, at the Brookland-CUA Metro station in Northeast Washington, D.C. The incident occurred around 4 p.m. when a dispute erupted among a group of young people on the station's platform. Avion, a student at Ida B. Wells Middle School, was present during the altercation.
According to police, while a fight was ensuing, a teenager who had not been directly involved in the initial conflict
brandished a handgun. The individual then fired the weapon, striking Avion in the chest. Despite the efforts of emergency responders who were called to the scene, Avion succumbed to his injuries on the platform. Investigators later recovered a 9mm shell casing near where he fell.
In the days following the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department released surveillance camera images of a person of interest to the public. The subject was described as a male with a light complexion, seen wearing a black jacket and hoodie, light blue jeans, and a gray backpack. Thanks to tips from the community, authorities were able to identify and apprehend a suspect.
A 16-year-old male from Northwest, D.C., was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed. Due to his status as a juvenile, his name has not been publicly released. He has since pleaded not guilty in D.C. Superior Court and is being detained by the D.C. Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services pending further legal proceedings. The tragic event has once again brought attention to the issue of youth violence in the city, leaving a family and community to mourn the loss of a young life.
