On the evening of August 16, 2023, the sounds of gunfire shattered the late summer calm in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C., leaving a community shaken and a family grieving. When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Third District arrived at the 3000 block of 14th Street, Northwest, they discovered a grim scene. A man, later identified as 33-year-old Kevin Scott, a Black male from nearby District Heights, was found with gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response from D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, Scott showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The violence of that night was not confined to a single victim. Shortly after discovering Scott, police were called to the 1300 block of Columbia Road, Northwest, just a short distance away. There, they found a second adult male who had also been shot. This victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, his life spared in the same incident that claimed Scott's.
In the days that followed, the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch launched an investigation into the shooting. Details about what led to the gunfire have been scarce, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the murder of Kevin Scott. The case remains an open and active investigation.
The department has appealed to the public for assistance, offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this homicide. As the investigation continues, the motive for the shooting and the circumstances that led to Scott’s untimely death remain unanswered questions, leaving a void in the lives of his loved ones and a sense of unease in the community he was a part of.
