In the early evening of January 16, 2024, tragedy struck in the 2400 block of S Street, Southeast, in Washington, D.C., when 23-year-old Javonni Coleman was fatally shot. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 5:12 p.m. and discovered Coleman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was then taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the official cause of death.
The investigation into Coleman's death led to the identification and arrest of two suspects. Months after the incident, on August 7, 2024, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended a 21-year-old male from Oxon Hill, Maryland. He was charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed. The second suspect, 28-year-old Delonte Terrell of Brandywine, Maryland, was arrested by the same task force on November 7, 2024. He faced the same charge of Second Degree Murder while Armed.
During court proceedings for one of the suspects, Karim Ibrahim, details of the investigation were revealed. Prosecutors presented evidence that included surveillance footage, witness statements, and phone records that they argued identified Ibrahim as the shooter. The motive for the killing was not publicly disclosed by the police. The case proceeded through the court system, with a judge finding probable cause for the charges against Ibrahim. He was later released on home confinement with GPS monitoring pending further legal proceedings.
