In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 17-year-old David Jerome Desmond III was tragically cut short. On December 5, 2021, on Fulton Avenue Southwest, the sounds of gunfire pierced the night. When Birmingham police officers arrived at the scene around 10:20 p.m., they found the young Black male unresponsive in the street, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Paramedics were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
David's death marked another grim statistic in a city grappling with a surge in violence, being one of six homicides that weekend in Birmingham. The tragic event left a community in mourning and a family searching for answers. The initial investigation by the Birmingham Police Department quickly pointed towards a suspect, thanks in part to tips from the community.
Within days of the shooting, an arrest was made. Daminyae Montreze Harris, a 24-year-old, was taken into custody in connection with David's murder. Witnesses reported seeing a person flee into a nearby home immediately after the shots were fired. This information led officers to secure the residence, where they later arrested Harris without incident. Following consultations with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, the Birmingham Police Department charged Harris with murder. His bond was set at $150,000 as he awaited further legal proceedings.
