In the early morning hours of November 9, 2014, the life of 26-year-old Vincent Chancellor was tragically cut short in Birmingham, Alabama. The night, which had started with his girlfriend at a local nightclub, took a devastating turn when they stopped at a restaurant. As Chancellor was returning to their vehicle after ordering food, he was confronted by an armed man who demanded his belongings.
Chancellor complied, handing over his cell phone and the money he had on him.
The assailant, however, was not satisfied and demanded other valuables from inside the car. As Chancellor moved to unhook a television set that was installed in the vehicle, he retrieved a handgun he kept for protection. An exchange of gunfire erupted between Chancellor and the robber. Both men were wounded in the shootout. Despite his injuries, Chancellor managed to get back into his car and drive a short distance before losing consciousness. Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported him to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his gunshot wounds later that day.
The investigation into the homicide led to the arrest of Stevin Ra Dunning. In December 2016, Dunning was convicted on three counts of capital murder in connection with the death of Vincent Chancellor. The charges were elevated to capital offenses because the murder occurred during a first-degree robbery, the victim was killed while in a vehicle, and the perpetrator fired a gun from within a vehicle.
For his role in the fatal shooting, Stevin Ra Dunning was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for each of the three capital murder convictions. The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals later upheld these convictions, ensuring that Dunning would remain incarcerated for the remainder of his life for the senseless act of violence that ended Vincent Chancellor's life.
