A life full of promise was tragically cut short on a Tuesday evening in Washington, D.C. Izaiah Davon Huggans, a 17-year-old male, was shot and killed on February 4, 2025, in the 3500 block of 6th Street, Southeast. Known affectionately to friends and family as 'Zay,' he was remembered for his big, beautiful, and infectious smile that could light up any room. Born in the city on March 23, 2007, Izaiah was a true D.C.
native with a life ahead of him.
The fatal incident unfolded at approximately 6:55 p.m. when officers from the Seventh District were called to the scene following the sound of gunshots. They found Izaiah unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response from D.C. Fire and EMS, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another young man, also a juvenile, was discovered nearby with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital for care.
Izaiah was a recent high school graduate, having proudly earned his diploma from Friendship Collegiate Academy Public Charter School in May 2024 at the age of 17. His ambition was evident in his pursuit of higher education; he had already earned 23 college credits and certifications in First Aid and CPR through a program at Trinity Washington University. Beyond his academic pursuits, Izaiah had a passion for creating music and was a loving and protective older brother. He was known for his warm presence and for making people feel welcome, a young man who was deeply cherished by his family.
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the shooting as a homicide. To date, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the case. The investigation remains active and ongoing as police continue to seek information from the community to bring those responsible for Izaiah Huggans's death to justice.
