In the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the sound of gunshots echoed through the 1800 block of E Street in Southeast, Washington, D.C. Responding to the reports at approximately 2:05 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department officers discovered a man lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. The man, identified as 50-year-old Lawrence Meekins of Northwest, D.C., was pronounced dead at the scene by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services after all lifesaving efforts failed.
The investigation into the death of the male victim was swiftly launched by the MPD's Homicide Branch. In an effort to gather information from the public, the department released surveillance footage on July 4, 2025. The video captured a person of interest in the case, a man seen riding a scooter in the vicinity of the shooting. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Mr. Meekins' death.
Months later, a significant development occurred in the case. On Monday, September 22, 2025, members of the Metropolitan Police Department's Fugitive Unit arrested a suspect. The individual taken into custody was identified as 40-year-old Ramone Richardson of Southeast, D.C. He was apprehended at the D.C. Jail under a D.C. Superior Court booking order and has been charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed in connection with the fatal shooting of Lawrence Meekins.
