On a cold January evening in Washington, D.C., the life of 48-year-old Kevin Lanard James, a male resident of the Northwest quadrant of the city, was tragically cut short. On Thursday, January 16, 2014, at approximately 7:39 p.m., police responded to a call for an accident with injuries in the 1500 block of Gallatin Place, Northeast. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. James inside a BMW, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency services rushed him to a local hospital, but his injury proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch immediately began an investigation into the shooting. The case remained under investigation for several months as authorities sought information from the public, offering a substantial reward for any tips that could lead to an arrest and conviction. The investigation was driven by the belief that the homicide was the result of a dispute over a debt.
Months later, a breakthrough in the case occurred. On Thursday, June 26, 2014, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended a suspect in connection with the murder. Kevin Darrell Boykins, a 43-year-old man from Mount Rainier, Maryland, was arrested and charged with first-degree felony murder while armed. Following his arrest, a judge ordered that Boykins be held in jail.
