Maxwell Emerson, a 25-year-old male, was visiting Washington, D.C., from his home in Crestwood, Kentucky, for a professional development seminar for educators. A social studies teacher and assistant wrestling coach at Oldham County High school, he was in the city to attend a conference at the Library of Congress. On the morning of July 5, 2023, his path crossed with 22-year-old Jaime Macedo outside the Brookland-CUA Metro Station.
The encounter, which began around 7:30 a.m., quickly
turned into a robbery. Surveillance footage captured Emerson walking away from the station with his hands raised as Macedo followed him. Macedo forced Emerson toward a park area on the campus of Catholic University. Just before 8 a.m., Emerson sent a desperate message to a family member, stating he was being robbed at gunpoint. On a park bench, the situation escalated as Macedo attempted to take Emerson's personal property. A struggle broke out between the two men, during which Emerson was shot in the abdomen. The suspect then fled the scene. Emerson was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Metropolitan Police Department launched an investigation, initially suggesting the victim and suspect knew each other, a claim Emerson's family disputed. Investigators released surveillance images of the suspect to the public, leading to a tip that resulted in Macedo's arrest on July 11. Police found a cut ankle monitor at Macedo's residence. Further evidence connected Macedo to the crime, including DNA found on a black ski mask left at the scene. Macedo, who had a prior criminal history including a gun charge and probation violations, was charged with first-degree murder while armed. In April 2024, a grand jury indicted Macedo on charges of first-degree murder while armed, attempted armed robbery, and several firearms offenses. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
