For over a year, his family held onto hope, enduring the agony of false leads and even a cruel hoax ransom demand.
The search for Brian ended in heartbreak on December 2, 2021, when his skeletal remains were discovered in a wooded area in Laurel, Maryland. An autopsy later confirmed that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into Brian's disappearance and death unraveled a story of a drug deal gone fatally wrong. Detectives were eventually led to Brandon Nguyen, a 24-year-old man from Laurel, Maryland. In November 2022, Nguyen was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. According to court documents, he confessed to shooting Brian, claiming it was in self-defense during a struggle that ensued after Brian allegedly tried to rob him during a marijuana transaction. Nguyen admitted to panicking after the shooting, driving Brian's body to Laurel, and leaving him in the woods. He then sold the car he had been driving that day, which the new owner reported smelled of bleach.
In January 2023, Brandon Nguyen pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. The prosecutor's office argued against the self-defense claim, pointing out that instead of seeking help for Brian, Nguyen drove for a significant amount of time to dispose of the body and then attempted to cover up his involvement. The pain of Brian's family was palpable in the courtroom as they spoke of their profound and unending grief. In December 2023, a judge sentenced Nguyen to 11 years in prison for his role in the death of Brian Ward, bringing a close to a long and painful chapter for a family who had lost their son.
