In the spring of 2015, a life was tragically cut short in the nation's capital. Devonte Reed, a 20-year-old male from Lanham, Maryland, was fatally shot on the evening of Sunday, May 24th. The violent encounter unfolded in the 500 block of 58th Street, Northeast, a devastating event that would lead to a swift police response and the beginning of a long legal process for those accused.
Responding to the scene, officers discovered a grim tableau.
Devonte Reed was found with gunshot wounds in the 300 block of 58th Street, while another man, 26-year-old Jamie Patterson of Northeast, D.C., was also found wounded nearby in the 500 block of the same street. Both men were transported to a local hospital, but tragically, Devonte Reed succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Reed's death moved quickly, and authorities soon identified a suspect. On the same day as the shooting, police arrested Jamie Patterson in connection with the homicide. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder while armed. The case would later see another individual, Alphonson Harridon, also charged in Reed's murder. In February of 2016, both Patterson and Harridon were presented with a plea deal, which they chose to reject, opting instead to face the charges brought against them in court.
