On the evening of May 7, 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the night in the 800 block of Oglethorpe Street, Northeast Washington, D.C., forever altering the lives of two families. When police arrived at the scene around 9:52 p.m., they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to local hospitals for medical attention. One of the men, a 43-year-old Black male named George Johnson Jr., succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The second man survived the violent encounter.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation. For months, the case remained open with no publicly identified suspects or arrests made, leaving a void of uncertainty for Johnson's loved ones and the community. The initial reports from law enforcement indicated that they were actively seeking the public's help for any information that might lead to the apprehension of those responsible for Johnson's death.
The investigation eventually led authorities to a suspect, Hahqwon Beale. Beale was not only implicated in the shooting that killed Johnson and injured another individual but was also connected to an armed carjacking of a pizza delivery driver that occurred on the same day in a different part of the city. He was subsequently arrested and faced a litany of charges, including first-degree murder while armed.
In a significant development in the case, Hahqwon Beale accepted a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to the charge of second-degree murder while armed in connection with George Johnson Jr.'s death. In exchange for his guilty plea, the prosecution agreed to drop the other charges against him. The terms of the plea deal included a recommended prison sentence of 21 to 25 years. This resolution brought a measure of closure to the legal proceedings surrounding the untimely death of George Johnson Jr.
