In the fall of 2016, a night of socializing in Northeast Washington, D.C. took a fatal turn, ending the life of 36-year-old Timothy Lassiter. On the evening of Wednesday, October 5, 2016, Lassiter was in the Fort Lincoln neighborhood, in the 3100 block of Berry Road NE, where he was spending time and drinking with others, including Marco F. Williams and Barry J. Giles.
At some point during the evening, Williams and Giles made a decision to shoot and kill Lassiter.
At 11:42 p.m., the night erupted in violence when Williams, armed with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, fired four shots at Lassiter, striking him twice. After Lassiter was shot, Giles went through his pockets and took his personal belongings. Responding medics and police officers found Lassiter, and he was transported by ambulance to a hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead in the early hours of October 6, 2016.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification of Williams and Giles as the suspects. Warrants for their arrests were issued on March 1, 2018. Giles was apprehended on March 5, 2018, and Williams was arrested on March 29, 2018. In a turn of events following Lassiter's funeral, Giles posted a video of himself on social media talking about the shooting, in which he boasted about his role in the incident. The video was later deleted.
Both men were brought to justice for their roles in Timothy Lassiter's death. In October 2018, Marco F. Williams, then 25, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while armed. Barry J. Giles, then 22, also known as 'Juany,' pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter and one count of carrying a pistol without a license. Their guilty pleas were accepted in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, with Williams facing a sentence of 15 ½ years in prison and Giles facing a sentence of 8 ½ years.
