A fourteen-year-old boy's life was tragically cut short on a Sunday afternoon in Southwest Washington, D.C., following a robbery that turned fatal. Myron Smith was shot multiple times on January 26, 2025, in the 4000 block of South Capitol Street, Southwest. Officers in the vicinity heard the gunshots and responded to the scene at approximately 2:28 p.m. Upon arrival, they found the young victim with gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a local hospital by emergency services, but despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department indicated that the shooting occurred after Myron was robbed. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the teenager running from his assailants before they caught up with him. Two of the three individuals then exited a vehicle and robbed him. When Myron attempted to retrieve his stolen belongings, he was shot multiple times. The suspects were seen in a stolen white Kia Optima. A witness later reported seeing the three individuals attempting to change their clothes and wipe down the vehicle before getting into a rideshare.
Authorities quickly located the suspect vehicle. Following a stop, officers from the Sixth District arrested three individuals and recovered two firearms. A 14-year-old male from Northeast, D.C. was arrested and charged with felony murder and carrying a pistol without a license. Two 16-year-old males, also from Northeast, D.C., were arrested and charged with carrying a pistol without a license. During a court hearing, a detective testified about the events leading to the shooting, though a defense attorney characterized the case as circumstantial. The case remains under investigation.
