In a tragic turn of events stemming from a drug-related dispute, 24-year-old Onyekachi Emmanuel Osuchukwu III was killed on November 14, 2015. His life was cut short in a Southeast Washington, D.C. apartment, the victim of a calculated act of violence perpetrated by a man he considered his best friend.
The man responsible for his death was his long-time friend, Eugene Burns. Evidence presented in court revealed that Burns had been planning the murder for several days.
He lured Osuchukwu, who was visiting from California, to his mother's apartment located in the 2900 block of 2nd Street SE. Once there, Burns confronted and then shot Osuchukwu multiple times, killing him before fleeing the scene.
In a cold and deceptive move, Burns returned to the apartment the following day with relatives, pretending to discover the body of his 'best friend' and subsequently calling 911. Investigators, however, were not deceived. An anonymous tip pointed to Burns as the shooter, and he was arrested in December 2015. During the investigation, it was revealed that Burns had confessed the killing to a relative, stating the shooting occurred after Osuchukwu charged at him. The motive appeared to be a disagreement over money from drug dealings the two were involved in.
The path to justice was a long and complex one. Burns was initially convicted of first-degree murder in 2017 and sentenced to 31 years in prison. However, this conviction was overturned on appeal in 2020. In a further attempt to evade justice, Burns and his cousin, Tyre Allen, conspired to obstruct the case by pressuring a witness to sign a false affidavit recanting their testimony. Despite these efforts, a second trial in October 2024 resulted in a jury once again finding Burns guilty of first-degree murder while armed and related firearm offenses. His cousin, Tyre Allen, was convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of justice. In January 2025, Eugene Burns was sentenced to a total of 37 years in prison for the murder and the subsequent conspiracy to influence a witness.
