In the early evening of Friday, May 29, 2020, the sound of gunshots echoed through the 3000 block of 30th Street in Southeast Washington, D.C. Responding to the reports, officers from the Seventh District of the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene around 6:23 p.m. to find a young man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was identified as 19-year-old Tyrell Smith, a Black male resident of Southeast, D.C.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the location and
quickly transported Smith to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead. The incident was ruled a homicide, and an investigation was launched by the Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department.
In the years that have followed, details regarding a motive or any potential suspects in the shooting of Tyrell Smith have not been publicly released. The case remains an open investigation, and as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with his death. The Metropolitan Police Department continues to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case and has offered a substantial reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of the teenager.
