Everett Stevenson King, 52, a Black male, was shot late in the morning of July 6, 2020, in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE in Washington, D.C. Seventh District officers responded around 11:25 a.m. to reports of gunfire and found an adult man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was taken by D.C. Fire and EMS to a local hospital, where lifesaving efforts failed and he was pronounced dead. Authorities later identified him as Everett King of Southeast, D.C.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch opened an investigation and appealed to the community for information, offering a reward for tips leading to an arrest and conviction. The circumstances released publicly focused on the time, place, and immediate response, while the department worked leads tied to violence along that stretch of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Anacostia.
On December 8, 2020, investigators obtained a custody order for a juvenile suspect and transported a 14-year-old male to the Homicide Branch, where he was charged with first-degree murder while armed in King’s killing. Because the accused was a juvenile, authorities did not release his name. At the time of that charging, officials noted he was already in the custody of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services in connection with the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Antonio Gardiner on July 4, 2020, in Southeast D.C. The case involving King’s death was described as ongoing following the juvenile’s charging.
