In the late morning of Friday, May 28, 2021, a promising young life was abruptly cut short on the streets of Washington, D.C. Kassius-Khon Glay, a 16-year-old Black male, was shot and killed in the Park View neighborhood. He was a bright high school student, known for his intelligence and kind heart, with aspirations that reached as far as zoology.
Those who knew him described him as a role model to his younger siblings and a young man who was always willing to help others.
On that fateful day, at approximately 11:50 a.m., gunshots rang out in the 3500 block of Warder Street, NW. Shortly after, a vehicle crashed less than a mile away in the 600 block of Upshur Street NW, near Grant Circle Park. When police and emergency services arrived at the scene of the crash, they discovered Kassius-Khon inside the vehicle, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. An adult male who was also in the car was found with non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The tragic irony of his violent death was compounded by the fact that he had witnessed the shooting death of his best friend just the year before.
In the aftermath of this senseless act, Kassius-Khon's family was left to grapple with an immeasurable loss. His parents spoke of the constant fear that Black parents have for their sons and implored the community to take a more active role in preventing such tragedies. They remembered their son as a gifted student who had just received a report card with all A's and one B. A vigil was held where friends and family gathered to mourn and release balloons in his memory, a somber tribute to a life full of potential that was extinguished far too soon.
Despite the public outcry and the family's pleas for justice, the investigation into Kassius-Khon Glay's murder has been met with significant challenges. The Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. However, to date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The case remains an open and painful chapter for a family and a community still searching for answers and an end to the violence that claimed a young man with a bright future.
