In the late hours of a Friday evening in Washington, D.C., the life of Adam Dove, a 45-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On March 8, 2024, at approximately 9:26 p.m., officers from the Sixth District responded to reports of a shooting in the 1400 block of Ridge Place, Southeast. Upon arrival, they discovered Mr. Dove in the roadway, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response from emergency services, Adam Dove succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A lifelong resident of Washington, D.C., Adam Dove was known affectionately by his nickname 'Hype'. He was remembered by friends and family as a strong-willed and caring individual, a great communicator, and a dedicated father to his daughter. At the time of his death, he was employed by the Department of Public Works in the City of College Park. His sudden and violent death sent ripples of grief through his community, leaving a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. A visitation and service to honor his memory were held on Friday, March 29, 2024.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. A reward of up to $25,000 was offered for tips that would aid the investigation. For nine months, detectives pursued leads in the case. Their efforts culminated on December 6, 2024, when the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force apprehended a suspect.
Authorities arrested 47-year-old Craig McKinney, also a resident of Southeast, D.C., in connection with the shooting death of Adam Dove. McKinney has been charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed. His arrest, which came after a D.C. Superior Court issued a warrant, marked a significant development in the investigation into Adam Dove's death. While the motive for the shooting has not been publicly released, the arrest brings a measure of legal closure to a case that had remained unsolved for the better part of a year.
