In the early moments of a Monday morning, just after midnight on February 24, 2025, the sound of gunshots shattered the quiet in the 1600 block of Benning Road, Northeast, in Washington, D.C. When Fifth District officers arrived at the scene near the Hechinger Mall, they discovered a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was unconscious and not breathing.
