In the late afternoon of September 26, 2021, the quiet of a residential street in Southeast Washington, D.C. was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Inside a home in the 5200 block of E Street, SE, 52-year-old Ronald Bailey was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. First responders rushed him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch immediately began an investigation
into the shooting. Their efforts quickly led them to a person of interest, and on October 6, 2021, they arrested 37-year-old Vernon Parrish of Northeast, D.C. Parrish was subsequently charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with Bailey's death. The investigation revealed that the motive behind the fatal shooting was a romantic rivalry, as both men were reportedly involved with the same woman.
The case against Vernon Parrish proceeded to trial, where evidence was presented and witness testimonies were heard. On July 9, 2024, a jury found Parrish guilty of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm. According to the evidence presented at trial, Parrish had driven to Bailey's home on the day of the murder with the intention of killing him. After arriving, he got out of his car, yelled for Bailey, and then fired multiple shots into the residence, killing him before fleeing the scene. Parrish's sentencing was scheduled for October 11, 2024.
