In the late summer of 2019, a 28-year-old man named Ronald Brown from Southeast Washington, D.C. lost his life in a fatal shooting. On the night of Thursday, August 22, 2019, at approximately 10:02 pm, the sounds of gunfire shattered the peace in the 3400 block of 18th Street, Southeast. Officers from the Seventh District responded to the scene after receiving reports of the gunshots.
Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene: Ronald Brown, unconscious and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services were called to the location, but Brown's injuries were too severe. He showed no signs of life and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The investigation into the homicide was led by detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch. For several months, the case remained under investigation until a breakthrough was made. On Monday, November 18, 2019, authorities from the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 26-year-old Melvin Simmons of Temple Hills, Maryland, in connection with the murder. Simmons was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder while Armed.
A different man named Ronald Brown, a 19-year-old high school student with aspirations of becoming an electrician, was tragically killed on a summer night in 2022. On Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at around 10:26 pm, gunfire erupted in a residential parking lot in the 4300 block of 4th Street, Southeast. When officers from the Seventh District arrived, they found Brown and another man, 41-year-old Tijuan Wilson, suffering from gunshot wounds. A woman was also found at the scene with critical injuries. Emergency services transported the surviving victims to a local hospital, but both Brown and Wilson were pronounced dead.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed a motive rooted in a prior conflict. Five days before the fatal shooting, on July 22, Ronald Brown and a man named Beysean Jones had been involved in a verbal and physical altercation at a tobacco and grocery store. Shortly after this dispute, shots were reportedly fired from Brown's vehicle at Jones's car. In an act of retaliation, Jones allegedly put a $30,000 bounty on the person who shot at him. On the night of the murders, surveillance footage captured a vehicle following Brown's car into the residential parking lot. At least two shooters then opened fire, discharging over 60 rounds. The barrage of bullets not only killed Brown and Wilson, who was an innocent bystander, but also caused damage to multiple vehicles and residential buildings in the vicinity. On November 1, 2022, 27-year-old Beysean Jones of District Heights, Maryland, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Following a trial, a jury found Jones guilty on two counts of first-degree murder while armed and other related charges on June 26, 2024. Subsequently, he was sentenced to 80 years in prison for his role in the deadly shooting.
