On a Friday afternoon, the day after Thanksgiving in 2021, a 22-year-old Black man named DeShaun Gladden was shot and killed in Washington, D.C. The fatal incident occurred around 1:32 p.m. in the 2300 block of 25th Street in Southeast Washington. When police officers arrived at the scene following a report of a shooting, they discovered Gladden suffering from gunshot wounds.
Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
Just months before his own life was cut short, Gladden had been navigating the legal system from the other side. He had been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of 36-year-old Marcus Wallace in November 2020. However, prosecutors dropped the murder charge against him in September 2021, and he was released from jail. According to his father, Sean Thomas, Gladden had been at the scene of the earlier shooting but was not responsible for the killing. Thomas said his son was a 'brilliant young man' who was trying to put his life back together after being wrongly accused. On the day he was killed, Gladden was reportedly on his way to work.
The investigation into DeShaun Gladden's death remains open. The Metropolitan Police Department has not publicly identified any suspect or suspects in the case, and as of late 2021, no arrests had been made. Detectives from the Homicide Branch are handling the investigation and have reached out to the public for assistance. The department is offering a substantial reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death.
