In the afternoon hours of a November day in Washington, D.C., the life of Khalil Jones, a 26-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On November 17, 2022, at approximately 2:53 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to the sound of gunshots in the 1500 block of Alabama Avenue, Southeast. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jones suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response from D.C.
Fire and Emergency Medical Services, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Known affectionately as 'KayK,' Khalil Jones was a graduate of Ballou High School and a devoted father to seven children. He was remembered for his contagious smile, strong work ethic, and positive attitude, which he brought to his job as a crew member at Five Guys. Jones had recently obtained his Food Manager's License and had aspirations of becoming a shift manager. He cherished spending time with his family, especially his children, and was known as a loving son, brother, and friend to many.
The investigation into Jones's death led authorities to identify a suspect. On December 23, 2022, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, located and arrested 22-year-old Joshua Stephenson of Southeast, D.C. Stephenson was subsequently charged with premeditated First Degree Murder while Armed in connection with the shooting death of Khalil Jones.
