On a Saturday night in Washington, D.C., the life of 27-year-old Devante Waters was tragically cut short. On October 16, 2021, at approximately 9:43 p.m., gunshots rang out in the 400 block of 12th Street, Southeast. Witnesses reported that Waters was the victim of a drive-by shooting that occurred in the middle of the block.
When officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Devante Waters suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital by D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Despite all life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The incident was one of three homicides to occur on Capitol Hill in a short span of eleven days, a fact that Police Chief Robert Contee acknowledged as unusual for the area.
In the aftermath of the shooting, investigators began piecing together the events of that night. Chief Contee stated that the investigation had made significant strides and that it was believed the individuals involved in the shooting had no connection to the neighborhood. The Metropolitan Police Department has offered a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Devante Waters.
As of now, the investigation into the murder of Devante Waters remains ongoing. Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the case. The police continue to seek assistance from the public, urging anyone with information to come forward to help bring those responsible for this act of violence to justice.
