Do you know who murdered Rodney Atkinson? On a Sunday evening in Washington, D.C., on April 18, 2004, a young Black man named Rodney A. Atkinson Jr. lost his life. At approximately 10:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Rosedale Street, NE, the sound of gunfire shattered the night, and when the chaos subsided, 21-year-old Rodney, known to some as 'Shorty Rock,' had been fatally shot. The Metropolitan Police Department was called to the scene to begin what would become a long and frustrating investigation into his murder.
In the days
that followed, the pain of Rodney's absence was deeply felt by his family and friends. His parents, Corenthia Tinch-McCutcheon and Rodney A. Atkinson, Sr., and his sister, Devita Atkinson, were left to grapple with the sudden and violent end to a life they cherished. In his obituary, friends and community members remembered him as a respectful young man who was looked up to as a 'big brother' figure to younger children in the neighborhood. They recalled his friendly greetings and mourned the tragic loss of a life they believed was full of promise.
Despite the passage of time, the case of Rodney Atkinson's murder remains unsolved. The Metropolitan Police Department's Violent Crimes Branch continues to investigate the homicide, but no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. His death is now considered a cold case, one of the many unsolved homicides in the District of Columbia. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered by the police for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his death. The authorities continue to seek assistance from the public, hoping that someone will come forward with the key piece of information that will bring closure to Rodney's family and deliver justice for a life cut short.
