In the late morning light of Wednesday, October 18, 2023, the sound of gunfire shattered the autumn calm in a Northeast Washington, D.C. neighborhood. When police officers from the Fifth District arrived at the 700 block of 15th Street, Northeast, they discovered a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was later identified as 37-year-old Daniel Hansford. Authorities noted that Hansford had no fixed ...
