On July 1, 2021, a tragic incident occurred in the northeast Las Vegas valley, resulting in the death of 23-year-old Andy Contreras. The event unfolded during a lunch break when two employees at a local business decided to engage in a fistfight. According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department investigators, the two employees, referred to as 'Employee 1' and 'Employee 2,' had an earlier altercation and agreed to settle their differences through a physical fight.
Other employees from the business followed to watch the altercation, and Employee 2 also called a friend to come and witness the fight.
The fight took place on Copper Sage Street, near the intersection of Craig Road and Lamb Boulevard. As the fight progressed, Employee 1 appeared to be winning. However, the friend of Employee 2, who had been called to watch the fight, intervened by pulling out a gun and firing several rounds. This sudden escalation resulted in three employees being shot, including Andy Contreras. Contreras, who was one of the employees watching the fight, was critically injured and later pronounced dead at University Medical Center. The Clark County Coroner's office later confirmed that Contreras died from a perforation of the lungs, heart, aorta, and pulmonary artery due to a gunshot wound in the left arm.
The suspect in this fatal shooting was identified as 19-year-old Jonathan Lopez, who was the friend called by Employee 2 to witness the fight. Lopez was arrested on July 8, 2021, and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on one count of open murder. Court records indicated that Lopez was being held without bail, and his next court appearance was scheduled for July 12, 2021.
The investigation, led by LVMPD Homicide Lt. Ray Spencer, revealed that after the shooting, everyone at the scene fled except for the injured Contreras, who was left behind. The swift response by law enforcement and the subsequent arrest of Jonathan Lopez brought some closure to the tragic event, though the community was left to grapple with the senseless violence that led to the loss of a young life.
