Erick Steven Silva, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, was working as a security guard at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017, a night that would end in tragedy. Stationed in front of the stage, he was in the midst of a crowd of thousands enjoying the final night of the country music event when the sound of gunfire shattered the festive atmosphere.
As chaos and panic erupted, Silva, an employee of Contemporary Services Corporation, acted with selfless heroism.
Instead of seeking safety for himself, he remained at his post and began helping frantic concertgoers escape the deadly barrage of bullets. Eyewitnesses and his colleagues reported that he was actively assisting people in climbing over a barricade to get to safety. It was during these courageous acts, while shielding and guiding others, that Silva was fatally struck by a bullet. His actions were credited with saving numerous lives in the midst of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
The perpetrator of the massacre was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, who had opened fire on the crowd from his suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. Paddock acted alone, and when law enforcement breached his hotel room, they found him deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No arrests were made in connection with the shooting as Paddock was the sole individual involved. Despite extensive investigations by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the FBI, a clear motive for Paddock's rampage has never been determined.
