On the evening of October 5, 2022, Kevin Lamar Fleming, a 50-year-old Black male from North Las Vegas, was found shot to death inside his vehicle. The incident occurred just after 10:40 p.m. in the parking lot of the Lake Tonopah Senior Apartments, located at 2151 Citrus Hills Avenue. Authorities who arrived at the scene discovered Fleming unresponsive, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial investigations by the Metropolitan Police Department suggested that Fleming had been shot shortly after he arrived at the apartment complex. The shooter fled the scene before police could arrive. For months, the case remained unsolved, with the gunman at large.
In January 2023, a breakthrough in the case led to the arrest of 43-year-old Kenny Richard. Richard was taken into custody on January 10 and booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of open murder. His arrest came after he was involved in a separate stabbing incident on January 9. Investigators determined that Richard had been the passenger in Fleming's Kia Sportage on the night of the murder. Surveillance video from the apartment complex captured Fleming driving into the complex with Richard in the passenger seat moments before the shooting. The video then showed Richard fleeing from the vehicle seven minutes later. An autopsy revealed that Fleming had been shot multiple times on his right side from close range, indicating the shooter was inside the vehicle with him. Richard had initially told police that another car was shooting at them, but investigators found that all the bullet damage was contained within Fleming's vehicle.
