On the cold winter night of January 11, 2010, in Denver, Colorado, the life of 21-year-old Lonell Emauel Franklin, a Black male, was tragically cut short. Franklin, accompanied by his 19-year-old friend DeShon Lee and a female companion, had an unfortunate verbal altercation with an unknown individual at a liquor store located at Bruce Randolph and York Street.
Following the dispute, the trio left in their vehicle and headed eastbound.
Their journey was fatefully interrupted as they stopped for a red light at the intersection of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Steele Street. At approximately 11:00 p.m., a silver or gray SUV pulled up alongside their car. A barrage of gunfire erupted from the SUV, striking all three occupants of Franklin's vehicle. Lonell Emauel Franklin was pronounced dead at the scene.
DeShon Lee was critically injured and rushed to Denver Health Medical Center, but he succumbed to his wounds later that evening. The female passenger was also shot but thankfully survived her injuries, which were considered non-life-threatening. The suspect vehicle fled the scene immediately after the shooting, disappearing into the night.
In the years that have passed, the double homicide of Lonell Emauel Franklin and DeShon Lee has remained unsolved, and the case has grown cold. The Denver Police Department has not publicly identified any suspects, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murders. The case remains an open investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter for the families of the victims. Authorities continue to ask for anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward.
