In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Denver, Colorado, a fatal encounter unfolded that would tragically end the life of 39-year-old Justin Slyter. On July 9, 2017, just after midnight, Slyter was outside a 7-Eleven on Colfax Avenue and Grant Street when he was shot and killed. The incident reportedly began as a confrontation over a stolen wallet.
What started as an attempt by Slyter to retrieve his belongings escalated when several other individuals became involved in the
altercation. In the ensuing chaos, one of the individuals fatally shot Slyter. Investigators quickly released images of two men they believed to be involved, who had fled the scene in a white, four-door sedan.
Within a day, police had arrested two suspects, David Houston, 25, and a juvenile cousin, Keondre Neblett. The investigation continued to unfold, leading to the identification and subsequent arrests of two other men. Rushawn Wharton, who was allegedly the first person to confront Slyter, was taken into custody, followed by the arrest of David Houston's brother, Davon Houston, in October of that year. All four men ultimately faced charges of first-degree murder and robbery in connection with the death of Justin Slyter. Investigators also linked the getaway vehicle to another crime, a drive-by shooting that had occurred just a day before Slyter's death, in which David Houston was also implicated.
