In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 21, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Chicopee, Massachusetts neighborhood. When police arrived at the 500 block of Center Street around 1:36 a.m., they discovered shell casings littering the area, a stark indication of the violence that had just transpired. The victim of this shooting, 28-year-old Hispanic male Luis Vazquez of Springfield, was not at the scene.
Around the same time that officers were securing the area on
Center Street, Vazquez arrived at Baystate Medical Center's emergency room by private transportation, suffering from a serious gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries eight days later on August 29, 2021.
The investigation into Vazquez's death is being handled by the Chicopee Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office, and the Hampden District Attorney's Office's Murder Unit. As of the one-year anniversary of the shooting, authorities have continued to appeal to the public for assistance in the ongoing investigation.
Investigators have specifically requested information about a Lexus 400H that was in the vicinity of Center Street around the time of the shooting. They are urging anyone who may have seen the vehicle or knows who may have been driving it or riding as a passenger to come forward. At this time, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Luis Vazquez. The case remains an active and open homicide investigation.
