Tre Kingsbury, 21, a White male from West Springfield, was shot on the night of May 29, 2025, on Charbonneau Terrace in Chicopee. Police were called at about 9:00 p.m. to 16 Charbonneau Terrace, where officers found him with penetrating wounds; despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives on scene identified a suspect and, the next day, secured an arrest.
Prosecutors named the suspect as 17-year-old Jayshawn Kempton of Chicopee, who was arraigned in Chicopee District Court on May 30, 2025, on charges of murder and illegal possession of a firearm. He was ordered held without the right to bail, with a pre-trial conference scheduled for June 26, 2025, while the investigation continues under the Hampden District Attorney’s Office and Chicopee Police.
In the days that followed, family remembrances painted a portrait of a young man who loved the outdoors and music, especially playing guitar, and who was known as an avid reader. Obituaries note that he was born in Middlebury, Vermont, later moving to West Springfield, and that a celebration of life was planned at Curran-Jones Funeral Home on June 13, 2025.
