On a Saturday afternoon, June 25, 2022, a dispute in Chicopee, Massachusetts, turned fatal, claiming the life of 42-year-old Anderson Martinez of Holyoke. The incident unfolded around 3:56 p.m. in the 600 block of Chicopee Street, where police responded to a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers discovered Martinez suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical aid was administered at the scene before he was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a nearby apartment complex where they located Angel Guzman, a 47-year-old resident of Chicopee. Guzman, who is partially confined to a wheelchair, was found in possession of a semi-automatic handgun. He complied with officers' commands to relinquish the weapon and was taken into custody without further incident.
Subsequent investigation suggests that Martinez and Guzman were engaged in an argument, during which both men brandished weapons before the fatal shots were fired. Guzman was arrested and later charged with voluntary manslaughter and assault by means of a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned in Chicopee District Court and held on $100,000 cash bail. The Hampden District Attorney's Office, along with the Chicopee Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
