On January 3, 2022, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Chicopee Police Officers responded to a report of a single vehicle crash at 190 East Street in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male, later identified as 23-year-old Kelvin Cruz-Lopez of Chicopee, who appeared to be suffering from a gunshot wound. The responding officers rendered first aid until Cruz-Lopez was transported to Baystate Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The
homicide investigation, led by detectives from the Chicopee Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office, quickly identified several suspects. The investigation revealed that the suspects were known to law enforcement due to a separate investigation by the Springfield Police Department.
As a result of the investigation, three 17-year-old suspects were arrested and charged with murder in connection with Cruz-Lopez's death. The suspects are Luis Torres, Andres Torres, and Luis Vasquez. Luis Torres and Andres Torres, both of Chicopee, were arraigned on murder charges in Chicopee District Court on January 24, 2022. They are currently being held without the right to bail and were scheduled to return to court on February 21, 2022.
Luis Vasquez, 17, of Springfield, was taken into custody on January 19, 2022. He was also charged with murder and arraigned in Chicopee District Court on January 20, 2022. Like the Torres brothers, Vasquez is being held without the right to bail, with his next scheduled court date set for February 17, 2022.
The arrests and subsequent arraignments mark a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Kelvin Cruz-Lopez. Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni expressed his sympathies to Cruz-Lopez's family, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in the case.
The case remains under active investigation by the Chicopee Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, and the Hampden District Attorney's Office's Murder Unit.
