Luis Bebo Rafael Ramos, a 31-year-old man from Springfield, Massachusetts, was fatally shot on March 12, 2021. The events leading to his death began to unfold late on the night of March 11, 2021, when Chicopee Police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Springfield and Walton Streets. Not long after, a single-vehicle crash was reported in Springfield at the intersection of Springfield and Cunningham Streets.
Upon arrival at the crash scene, officers discovered Luis Ramos
inside the vehicle, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries in the early morning of March 12, 2021. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later officially ruled his death a homicide. Investigators determined that the initial crime scene was located in Chicopee.
For the following eight months, an intensive investigation into the death of Luis Ramos was conducted by the Chicopee Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office, and the Hampden District Attorney's Office Murder Unit. This comprehensive investigation included the execution of eleven search warrants and the use of numerous investigative techniques. The diligent work of the authorities led to the identification of a suspect in the case.
On November 8, 2021, an arrest warrant was issued for Almando Diaz, a 39-year-old resident of Springfield. That same day, he was located and taken into custody by members of the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, the Hampden District Attorney's SAFE Unit, the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit, and the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, along with the Chicopee Police Department. Almando Diaz was subsequently charged with the first-degree murder of Luis Ramos. He was arraigned in Chicopee District Court and is being held without the right to bail. His next scheduled court date was set for December 6, 2021.
