On the night of February 3, 2024, Marquis Newson, a 34-year-old Black/African American man, was in a parking lot on Springfield Street in his hometown of Chicopee, Massachusetts. The location was directly across from City Hall, a place that would soon become the scene of a tragedy. Around 10 p.m., the sound of gunfire broke the evening quiet, prompting calls to the Chicopee Police Department. When officers arrived at the Ames Privilege parking lot, they found Marquis on the ground, critically injured by a gunshot wound.

Emergency responders acted quickly, rushing him to Baystate Medical Center in nearby Springfield. For two days, medical staff worked to save his life while his family waited, hoping for the best. Despite their efforts, Marquis succumbed to his injuries on February 5, 2024. His death launched a homicide investigation, drawing in resources from the Chicopee Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney's Office, and the Hampden DA's Murder Unit.

For three months, investigators worked to piece together the events of that fatal night. Their efforts led them to a suspect, another Chicopee resident named Jalal Williams, who was 32 years old at the time. In early May 2024, Williams was arrested and charged with the murder of Marquis Newson. While authorities confirmed the arrest, they did not publicly release details about a potential motive or what specific evidence linked Williams to the shooting.

Following his arrest, Jalal Williams was arraigned in Chicopee District Court. He faced the charge of murder and was ordered by the judge to be held without the right to bail, pending future court proceedings. His next court appearance was scheduled for June 7. The investigation officially remained ongoing as the case against him moved forward through the legal system.

The loss was deeply felt by those who knew Marquis. Born in Springfield, he was remembered as a playful and silly person who greeted everyone with an unforgettable smile and had a knack for making people laugh. A devoted and loving father to his two children, a son and a daughter, he took immense pride in his role as a parent. A protective brother and a cherished family member, he had a passion for sports, especially baseball and basketball, and a deep love for music. His life was cut short, leaving behind a grieving family and a community seeking justice.
