John "Marty" Martin, a 53-year-old Caucasian male, was a lifelong resident of Chicopee, Massachusetts, a place he had always called home. Born in the nearby city of Holyoke, he had built a life in Chicopee, graduating from Chicopee Comprehensive High School and later working as a supervisor and machine operator at the U.S. Tsubaki Company in Holyoke. He was a father, a son, a brother, and a cherished partner, known for his love of motorcycling and golfing.

The night of January 15, 2022, shattered the quiet rhythm of his life. Inside a home on Arcade Street, the life John had built was tragically cut short by a gunshot wound. When Chicopee police officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim, they were met with a tense scene. An armed man was present at the residence. After a careful and persuasive negotiation, the officers convinced the individual to surrender his weapon, and he was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Nicholas Moriarty, also a resident of Chicopee. While the authorities did not immediately release a motive for the shooting, the investigation was swiftly undertaken by the Chicopee Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, and the Hampden District Attorney's Office's Murder Unit. Moriarty was subsequently arraigned in Chicopee District Court on a charge of murder and was ordered to be held without the right to bail, awaiting further court proceedings.
