On September 30, 1994, 26-year-old Shango Yamaya Wade was fatally shot in North Portland, Oregon. Originally from Los Angeles County, California, Wade had relocated to Portland to work in construction. He was accompanied by 30-year-old Deborah Jean Payton at the time of the incident.
The events leading to the tragedy began on September 22, 1994, when Wade's apartment was burglarized, resulting in the theft of items including a television and stereo equipment.
Shortly after the burglary, Wade's neighbor observed individuals transferring similar items into a light blue Mercedes-Benz. Wade and a friend managed to apprehend one suspect, who later escaped before police arrived.
On the day of the shooting, Wade confronted Earl Douglas Wilkins at a hair salon where Wilkins was employed, accusing him of involvement in the burglary. Witnesses reported a heated exchange between the two men. Subsequently, as Wade and Payton sat in a red van near the intersection of North Killingsworth and Rodney Streets, Wilkins approached the vehicle and fired multiple shots, striking both occupants in the head. The van then drifted across the street and collided with a telephone pole.
Wilkins was arrested and charged with the murders of Wade and Payton. During the trial, he claimed self-defense, alleging that Wade had brandished a firearm during their confrontation. However, witness testimonies contradicted this account, and no evidence supported the presence of a weapon in Wade's possession. The jury found Wilkins guilty of aggravated murder, theft, and felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
In the years following the incident, a roadside memorial was established at the site of the shooting, commemorating Wade and Payton. The memorial, maintained by Wade's close friends, has remained intact over the years, serving as a poignant reminder of the tragic event.
